A trout becomes a salmon after it reaches the ocean. Then it goes back to the river, to spawn for one last time. However, this does not make it a trout, nor are its offspring salmon.
Unlike salmon, we routinely return to the rivers of our life—memories, lost spaces, dreams—out of a sense of gratitude, or perhaps nostalgia. These experiences can bring joy and greater insight into how far we've traveled in life. However, they can also bring sadness. In those cases, it helps to remember that going back does not erase our growth.
This motivational-style print is part of a “page spread diptych” featured in Arte Frecuencia, a magazine by Wind. While a salmon returns once, we return many times, and so the maxim—in the style of illuminated manuscripts—reflects that for added meaning.
